Topic: How Introspection Gives You a Handle on Emotional Issues
Introspection per se is the skill of identifying what you feel and why you feel it. There are several introspection techniques in the Thinking Lab, including Introspection 101 and Empathy Bath.
Likely everyone in the Thinking Lab has learned one of these tactics at one time or another. In this class, we will do a quick introspection exercise, and then discuss at length how and why introspection helps you get a handle on emotional issues. We will discuss:
- How to ensure introspection helps you settle down instead of melt down
- How you can learn to introspect in the heat of the moment when you don't have time to do an exercise
- Why just naming the feeling and the associated thought is not enough
Optional preparation: Within 24 hours of the class, do a full-blown Empathy Bath on a significant emotional issue. This will be a great source of examples for discussion. We will refer to the Emotions & Values 101 handout.
