The Thinking Lab - Values for a Conceptual Being - for Members
June 19, 2019
Topic: Values for a Conceptual Being
Leonard Peikoff writes: "All animal needs and pleasures are transfigured in the context of a rational animal. This is apparent even in regard to such simple needs as food and shelter...." He goes on to point out that the pleasure we get from eating is not primarily from the sensation of satisfying hunger, but from the conceptually formulated values that give it meaning. "Thus the joys of haute cuisine with special friends amid crystal and tapestries in a fine restaurant, or of beef stew and a glass of wine with a loving wife in one's own dining room...."
In this talk, we will discuss how the entire value system, including the role of emotions, is transformed for a conceptual being.
